NIC wrestling takes third at National Duals

The North Idaho College wrestling team placed third in the NJCAA National Duals tournament after a 23-21 victory over Carl Albert State Saturday, Jan. 14 in Miami, Okla.

The Cards came away victorious in their quarterfinal match over Northeast Oklahoma 23-21. NIC then fell 28-13 in the semifinals against Triton College.

The Cardinals went 2-1 in matches Friday, Jan. 13 to advance in the tournament after a 52-6 victory over Neosho County Community College, a 25-15 loss against Iowa Central Community College and a 42-9 win over Cowley College.

NIC’s Brant Porter went 6-0 in his matches over the tournament.

NIC will host its lone two home wrestling matches of the season this week in the Christianson Gymnasium on NIC’s main campus in Coeur d’Alene. The Cards face off with Simon Fraser University at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 and Clackamas Community College at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors. Admission is free for NIC faculty and staff, as well as children and students of any school.

This season, the Cardinals traveled to Oregon City, Ore. to face Clackamas in December and defeated the Cougars 28-18. Clackamas currently holds the top spot in the NJCAA rankings while NIC is ranked 10th. Clackamas has won the NJCAA National Championship the past four years.
