NIC athletics to resume with modified seasons

Friday, July 10, 2020

North Idaho College athletes will return to play for the 2020-2021 sports seasons following NIC COVID-19 health and safety protocols in tandem with guidelines announced Thursday by the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC).

The NWAC guidance calls for a phased approach to returning to practice, competition, and championships, and includes a plan to move most fall sports to condensed winter and spring schedules.

Cross country and golf are the only NWAC sports that will commence in the fall with reduced and modified schedules.

“The ultimate goal is to provide a restart surrounded in as much normalcy as possible while continuing to protect the safety of our student-athletes, staff, and slow the spread of COVID-19,” states the NWAC, in the guidelines.

NIC wrestling, part of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) will begin its competition season in January, which is also a delayed start.

Graydon Stanley, NIC Vice President for Student Services, said everyone at NIC looks forward to the return of student-athletes to the college campus.

“We are committed to providing the safest environment possible for all students. NIC’s coaches and other athletic department personnel are determined and eager to help student-athletes grow academically and athletically in these challenging times,” Stanley said. “Like always, our coaches will support student success in the classroom first while preparing for athletic achievements this spring.”
