Community invited to virtual Indigenous Peoples Day event

The North Idaho College American Indian Advisory Council and the NIC Diversity Council are hosting “Indigenous Peoples Day: Conversations with Native Education Leaders” on Monday, Oct. 12 from noon to 1 p.m.

This virtual Zoom event, facilitated by NIC Assistant Professor of American Indian Studies Dr. Victor Begay, will feature two American Indian public school principals who will discuss the ways their schools engage staff and students about the Columbus Day narrative. 

Laina Phillips (Spokane Tribe of Indians), principal of Wellpinit High School, Wellpinit, Washington; and Lance West (Pyramid Lake Paiute), principal of Schurz Elementary School, Schurz, Nevada, will share their unique experiences as school principals in their homelands. They will talk about how they navigate the processes, approaches and curriculum about the Columbus Day narrative.
