The North Idaho College wrestling team is giving out free books this holiday season to various local elementary schools as part of the Shirley Parker Reading Program. These student-athletes have given out more than 850 free books so far this month – and more than 18,000 books in the program’s history.

This year, the NIC wrestling team is also partnering with SpringHill Suites by Marriott, a sponsor of the Tri-State Wrestling Tournament that NIC will be hosting Dec. 20-21. SpringHill Suites will donate $5 per room booked for the event to the reading program.

Established in 2002 as a partnership with Parker Toyota, the program was named in honor of Doug Parker’s late wife, Shirley, who was a big supporter of both reading and wrestling. The aim of the reading program is to provide at least one book to every first-grader in the Coeur d’Alene School District each year. Members of NIC’s wrestling team have already visited multiple elementary schools within the Coeur d’Alene School District, and they will visit more schools in January.
